Important Member Notice: Data Breach Statement

Dear Members,

We are writing to inform you of a serious matter concerning the privacy of member information within Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation.

During a recent internal audit of our membership base conducted by our newly appointed CEO, a breach of data security was identified. It was discovered that an employee, who has since been terminated for serious misconduct, had inappropriately accessed and sent member information to an unauthorised personal email address. This was done without the knowledge or permission of the Corporation.

Upon discovery of the breach, a thorough IT forensic audit was immediately conducted, along with an investigation to understand the full extent of the incident. We are taking every step necessary to ensure your information is protected and to prevent any future breaches.

The actions we have taken include:

  • Termination of the individual involved.

  • Completion of an IT forensic investigation to assess the breach.

  • Notification of relevant privacy and regulatory authorities.

  • Strengthening of internal systems, policies, and access controls.

  • A full review of our data handling procedures.

  • Commenced a review of the validity of memberships.

We understand the seriousness of this situation and the importance of maintaining your trust. If you have concerns or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at kaya@whadjuknoongar.org.au.

We sincerely apologise for this breach and thank you for your ongoing support and understanding.

Kind regards,

Leon Ruri
Chief Executive Officer
