Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation Appoints New Lands Officer, Marking Historic Workforce Growth

Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation (WAC) is proud to announce the appointment of Khia Emslie-O'Brien, a proud Wiradjuri woman and experienced GIS analyst, as the Corporation’s new Lands Officer.

This appointment is a significant milestone for WAC, as it sees the Corporation reach its largest workforce to date, reflecting the growing strength and capacity of the organisation to deliver on its purpose of empowering Whadjuk people and strengthening their connection to Boodja (Country).

Khia brings a strong foundation in spatial analysis, cartography, and database management, with experience across leading geospatial platforms including ESRI, QGIS, and FME, alongside core Microsoft tools. Her passion lies in harnessing mapping technologies to support Indigenous communities and address complex land-related challenges in culturally responsive ways.

Khia views her role through a cultural lens, recognising the power of mapping and spatial data in telling stories, protecting heritage, and supporting Country.

“I’m excited to join the Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation and contribute to its important work,” Khia said.

“Using GIS to support Traditional Owners in their connection to land is deeply meaningful to me, and I’m committed to using all my skills to help empower Whadjuk people and Boodja.”

WAC CEO Leon Ruri welcomed the appointment and said

“Khia’s expertise and cultural insight make her a valuable addition to our team. Her appointment reflects WAC’s ongoing commitment to building internal capability and delivering meaningful outcomes for Whadjuk people.”

Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation looks forward to the impact Khia will make in this new role and to the continued growth and strength of its workforce and community.
